By Michael Beh. After Shakespeare & Friends.

From 9 – 24 May, for 8 Performances Only (including one Saturday relaxed performance at 1.30pm + a SPECIAL UP LATE EVENT) The Curators’ perform at our pop-up theatre venue, ‘The BARNEY’, in the heart of Red Hill.

When you instantly fall in love with somebody, a really lock eyes across a crowded room kind of moment, what do you do? Is this fate? The will of the Gods? Do you have free will to choose your destiny?

Romeo loves Juliet, Joanie loves Chachi. Set in the world today, in a run-down cabaret at the end of the universe, two actors, or their characters, fall passionately in love. She is playing Helen (demi-goddess of Sparta, most beautiful woman in the world). He is playing Paris (think the naughty boy of Troy fame). But she has a Marilyn Monroe fixation, wearing clothes, hair and voice that ape this candle in the wind. And he is Elvis obsessed. Nothing but a ‘hound dog’ who plays guitar, sings his idols songs and ‘can’t help falling in love with you’.

Is any of this real, or is this kind of profound love a fantasy? “But soft what light through yonder window breaks?” Angel, a Drag King, who runs the Century of God Cabaret, where our story unravels, is fraught by their romance and the need to get these characters on stage, in any guise, to tell their story.

This comedy which ends our trilogy, is a fitting conclusion to The Curators’ deep dive into the world of love, catastrophe and redemption. After all, “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.” “Love conquers everything.” And “Where do I begin to tell the story of how great a love can be.” Where? On The Curators’ stage.
